I knew you’d like my new shoes (as no one ever said).

I have an issue with the way some people (mainly Americans or lazy speakers) say ‘new’.

Just saying:
The Spanish alphabet contains a letter ‘n’ with a tilde or virgulilla above it and it’s known as an enya or ‘ñ’.  It’s often described as sounding like the ‘n’ in onion.  It’s not too far then from ‘knew’ or how ‘new’ should be pronounced – two distinctly different English homophones.

So, although perhaps not exactly what we might call homonyms, new and news should begin with the same sound as the enya mentioned above. They should never be pronounced ‘noo’ or ‘noos’! Perhaps we should have an enya too?

Rant over.

My friend John (Gav’s dad) and I spend hours talking about this and that whilst we’re out walking. Anything, in fact – not just this and that. We talk about politics, religion, sex, marriage, shopping, gardening, DIY – and more surreal things that wouldn’t stand the reaction of others, not attuned to our range of discussion.

However, one disturbing discussion that we often drift into, perhaps more surreal than the others; is that we might in fact be just two old men, already gaga, lost our memories, pumped with drugs and sat outside a care facility – dreaming that ALL THIS, is JUST A DREAM. ‘This’ being the world around us.img_0163

Imagine if you took a powerful sleeping draught at some point early in 2016 and you have just woken to the news that your favourite celebrity was dead: http://www.legacy.com/news/galleries/celebrity-deaths/gallery/2016-celebrity-deaths/292092, that Britain had narrowly voted to leave Europe, that Boris Johnson was now foreign secretary, that David Cameron had stepped aside for Theresa May and that Donald Trump, would in January 2017 become leader of the free world, having just won the U.S. presidential election. WHAT!!!

First of all – leave Europe?  How did that happen?  http://www.richardcorbett.org.uk/long-list-leave-lies/ how will that turn out!

Then Donald Trump – really? The wall building, Mexican hating, misogynistic racist Donald Trump? http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/donald-trump-deport-immigrants-immediately-when-mexico-wall-a7415116.html how will that turn out!

I think I need to go back to my rocking chair, plug in to some David Bowie and go back to sleep.

The news bulletin depressed me tonight.

Having said that, the News often depresses me; it’s hard to feel cheerful when you are constantly bombarded with media-rich, alarmist, sensational ‘news’. I stopped watching regularly a long time ago, when I realised that it was always biased towards ‘popular’ opinion, often unbalanced and confrontational.

But tonight, I was in a hotel room changing to go out for dinner and the chambermaid had left the tele on (he/she was obviously watching/listening to Wimbledon whilst busily cleaning my room). The big news was this week’s national(ish) strike by public sector workers. The ‘balanced’ opinion was asking people what they thought of the strike and showing one ‘for’ and one ‘against’ – so much for popularist reporting! The alarmist side of the report was provided by a variety of politicians, including Wilfred Pickles, Toff Cameron and diddy Milliband. What saddened me was that their verbal garbage was exactly the same stuff turned out by Thatcher’s henchmen way back when. It made me shiver – they do say that what goes around, comes around.

I was further depressed by those members of the public employed by ‘The Private Sector’ implying that the public sector have it easy and that ‘they’ (the Private Sector) have to suck it up and get on with it. Yet others, said ‘but teachers have such long holidays’! What person EACH interviewee misses – is the point! This is a protest (no doubt forlorn but a protest nevertheless) over pensions and the theft and misappropriation of million’s of workers pension funds: public AND private. Perhaps I go too far there, perhaps it’s not exactly (or not just) pension funds that have been stolen and misappropriated, but for goodness sake, all governments have known since the baby boom days, that we would have and ageing population in the 2000’s.

Or, didn’t they? I did – I was told in college in 1967.

B.t.w. I was also told about global warming!
